Charity Strikes A Chord With Music Stars

Although we don’t want to take away any column inches from the news about the devastating earthquakes in Haiti, and various charity appeals for funds and support, we thought now was a good time to cover some charity stories that we’ve had in to music.co.uk.

Our first story focuses on a charity gig being held at Barfly in Camden, London, on January 31st 2010. This one-off gig has been organised to raise funds for a feeding program at Nanyuki Preparatory School in central Kenya, and will feature three great bands. Headlining the event will be the Whybirds, who are supported by the interestingly named Tinkerjack and To The Moon Alice. Headliners the Whybirds are all singer songwriters, and have created a sound that’s said to reference rock music from the last four decades. They have recently uploaded their second album to their website, which is due for a full release this year, with this one-off charity gig all set to be a worthwhile and exciting addition to their gig schedule.

Tickets for this event are available now, priced at £7.50 in advance, or £8.50 on the door. Further details and ticket bookings available online at www.barflyclub.com/camden or by phone on 0844 8472424.

We’ve also had news through concerning Oksana Grigorieva, the stunning voice behind the album ‘Beautiful Heartache’. Oksana’s heart has been captured by the charity Chernobyl Children’s Project International, for which she raises funds and awareness. Part of this charity program is a Cardiac Surgery Program which has saved the lives of many young children, and the program hopes to raise funds to send more surgical teams to Belarus and The Ukraine, to not only save more lives, but train local surgeons too. With 6000 children being born every year with genetic heart disease, this is vital work. As you can see from the video below, Oksana has recently spoken out about this project, and she has also released a charity single called Angel, which is available on I-Tunes. If you’d like to find out more about this project, check out Oksana’s blog at http://oksana.fm/heart

Finally we have some dance-tastic news concerning up and coming girl group The Dolly Rockers. They have recently signed up to the Fight Cervical Cancer In Style Campaign, which aims to educate females of all ages about Cervical Cancer, the risks, and how to reduce them. This is a national campaign run by GlaxoSmithKline, with support from The Jo’s Trust, and The Royal College Of Nursing.

The Dolly Rockers have given their support to this important project, by taking part in a comedy ‘dance off’ style video, where the band lead two dance troupes in a ‘mock’ contest. They dance wearing limited edition scarves, which have been especially designed by PPQ. It’s hoped this video will strike a chord with women, and encourage them to visit the campaign website, www.showyourstyle.co.uk. Take a look at this site, or other information on Cervical Cancer, and you’ll soon realise how important it is to read up on the disease. With 8 people being diagnosed, and 3 people dying from it everyday, and many cases being caused by a virus that CAN be prevented, this is an issue that needs to be spoken about in anyway possible. Please check out the Dolly Rockers video below, and if you’re interested in this, or any of the other projects mentioned in this post, check out the relevant web links, and lend your support if you can.
