Oh I do love my job sometimes, especially when an absolute gem of a review assignment lands in my in-box. Jason Mraz is a name I’ve heard quite a few times, and although I’ve listened to his song ‘I’m Yours’ before, I guess this is my first proper introduction to the American born singer-songwriter.
Rumour has it that Mraz came across Calillat on MySpace, and what a lucky discovery that was! I would go as far as to say that this is one of the best collaborations/working partnerships I have come across in quite a while. Both artists seem to have a similar vocal/musical style, and their voices meld well together, to produce something laid back and harmonious. The music is quite refreshing in its simplicity, with subtle nods to folk, pop, and acoustic genres of music. There’s also added in a few quirky, jazzy bursts of music, when Mraz is singing as well.
I really enjoyed listening to it, and the video adds to the beauty of the whole thing. As a girl I did enjoy seeing Jason Mraz suited and booted, surrounded by old gothic buildings, in what I believe is the Czech Republic, while Colbie Calillat filmed her parts in a hilly beach location. The combination of nature, architecture, and two good looking people is quite charming, and what could be a story of a long distance relationship is interesting.
The end verdict? Well, I’d certainly be interested in hearing more from both artists, and when you’re left wanting more, that can only be a good thing!
‘Lucky’ is available in the U.K now.
