Chelmsford, the county town of Essex, has always been alive to the sound of music, thanks to venues like the late great Army and Navy, and festivals such as ‘V’. But while campaigns still continue for the larger concert hall, that many of us want and need, there are also plenty of smaller scale live music nights in and around Chelmsford, that are well worth checking out.  These include ‘Chelmsford Rocks Out’, a new monthly night, making its debut on February 7th at the Cramphorn Theatre. Organised by well known local promoter Shakster Records, the gigs will feature not only the best touring acts in the U.K, but support from local bands as well.

Headline act on the 7th is the talented singer-songwriter Jersey Budd. Although only 24 he plays/sings music that belies his years, and pays tribute to rock legends such as Bruce Springsteen and Cat Stevens. His Chelmsford date is part of a nationwide tour to promote debut album ‘Wonderlands’, and if his myspace page is anything to go by, the audience will be in for a great night!

Like Jersey Budd, local support act London Black Market also cites Bruce Springsteen among their influences, but their music is a complete contrast to Jersey’s acoustic rock melodies. Their set is sure to include the frantic punk/rock explosion that is their debut single ‘Checkmate’ and other loud/proud guitar driven tunes.

Also appearing on the night, is Chelmsford based band The Library Suits. They only formed in 2008 but are already a popular addition to the live music scene in London and the South East. Library Suits and London Black Market both have singles available on I-Tunes, but before you download, check them out live with Jersey Budd, it’s a night not to be missed.

Also worth a visit is the ambient St Anne’s Castle in Great Leigh’s, home to the monthly ‘Lizzie B’ experience. Singer-Songwriter Lizzie B presents as the best of the regions acoustic talent take to the stage. Head along to the pub on 20th February and you’ll be treated to no less than three acoustic male singers, and a band unusually called ‘Nasty Rabbits’. Have no fear, the Nasty Rabbits won’t bite! But they do promise to entertain you with their acoustic, rock, country, pop fusion. In true rock and roll fashion they don’t conform, they try everything!

Acoustic treats on the night come from Stue Skinner and Luke who both make their debuts at St Anne’s Castle. Stue Skinner is the more experienced performer, who is now attracting interest in both his band Legion Seven, and his solo material which he will perform at the St Annes gig. Luke picked up the guitar just three years ago, but has produced a refreshing, yet mellow acoustic sound. Third in the trio of acoustic male singers is Karmwud, who has just finished recording his debut solo album.
