The Ocean Between Us – ‘All That We Are’ EP – Review

The Ocean Between Us
The Ocean Between Us

The Ocean Between Us (TOBU) are a death/metalcore band from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England and consisting of 5 members, Judd Wrighton-Vocals, Bryn Barker- Guitar, Billy Gaskell- Guitar, Robert Kennedy- Drums and Ben Beagles- Bass.

The band have an EP out entitled ‘All That We Are’ and we music.co.uk think you should download it or see these guys live because you’re in for a treat!

Songs on the 4 tracked EP include:

1. Begin The End. This song is about the end of the world, or judgment day in other words. The song mixes thrash and metalcore rifts together with powerful drum blasts, a slight use of electronica that is all fused with a mixture of clear and screaming vocals.

‘Begin The End’

Stare at the future,
Notice there’s nothing left,
How can you make the best of what you have,
When you have nothing?
Just yourself in one piece,
We’ll make it through this,
You break me to pieces,
Alone,  its destiny.

Judgement day is upon us,
The beginning of the end.
Now its time to say goodbye.
Goodbye to you.

Stare at the future,
Notice there’s nothing left,
How can you make the best of what you have,
When you have nothing?

I shall never see you.
Your miles away,
I could be anywhere in the world,
But im stuck here.
I’m just one guy,
With one secret.
I started this war,
But I’m going to end it right here.

Judgement day is upon us,
The beginning of the end.
Now its time to say our goodbyes.
Our goodbyes to you.

GAME OVER!
No more continues,
ITS OVER!
You caused this war.

Could this be the end of the world?

2. Suicide Driveway. This song is about not fitting in and how the people ridiculed them for being different, soon followed them to be popular, but being fake. The song isn’t as fast paced as the last but still fits in with the band’s style; the intro entails some essence of electronica again and the same death/metalcore screaming vocals making the song more ferocious and angry.

‘Suicide Driveway’

They all surround me, come join the crowd.
Just like a leech. Stuck right to me.
We wait for weeks. There’s still no signs.
Attention please! Nobody fucking loves you!

We will never join them.

And I’m stuck here being the good guy when things go wrong.
And I trust you more than most do, so thanks for that.
They stand out clear and fake, as some would say.
They stand out clear and fake, don’t be proud.

They all think that, they all stand out.
We claim to be different, It’s all a lie.
And we could wait for years and still stand alone.
Attention please, you’ve gone too far,

You’ve gone too far,
Way past the line.
You’ve gone too far.
Too far.

So fucking go.

They all think that, they all stand out.
We claim to be different, It’s all a lie.
And we could wait for years and still stand alone.
Attention please, you make me sick.

3. At The Turning Point. This song starts of with harsh deep screaming vocals and a drum beat, then accompanied by a break down which then turns into a crushing rift and amazing song!

‘At The Turning Point’

She wears her heart on her sleeve.
Showing off her true feelings.

What’s not to like?
You do the talking, i do the walking.
Speaking in tongue, word for word.
The darkest hour is just before the dawn.
So all this sadness can end in one less blow.

What’s not to like?
Word for fucking word.
In this time.
Stand at the top of the mountain, and shout.
When the only response is your echo,
You are there.

4. Breakfast in Manchester. This is my favourite song on the EP simply because it’s fucking ace! The lyrics that mention coco pops definitely get the thumbs up from me. But aside from the joking lyrics the music within the song brings it all together using the catchy metal rifts/breakdowns and ravenous vocals and pig squeal. Definitely check this song out!!!

‘Breakfast In Manchester’

I want my toast.
My toast is good.
buttered and warm.
That’s how i roll.
Manchester rules.
This breakfast owns.
Vodka on top.
Straight back to Leeds.
I want my coco pops.
Don’t touch my coco pops.
FUCK
What goes on in that bowl?
I want to know.
I tried to have my breakfast after a good night,
Of being under the influence of alcohol.
Manchester’s fun.
I have fun there.
But Yorkshire wins.
Nowt can compare.
He’s eating everything, he’s gonna die of heart disease.
He’s eating everything, Ste’s gonna die of heart disease.
